Yellofruit Reviews by the League
Want to make friends in your neighbourhood?
Yep! I put the call out to my neighbourhood League of Moms and their kids to come to a YellofruitTM tasting party in my backyard one sunny weekend. I am always on the lookout for healthier snacks and treats to feed my family and I know my friends are too. So when I heard that YellofruitTM, a non-dairy frozen banana dessert was coming to Toronto stores AND it was created by local Toronto parents (because I also have a soft spot for entrepreneurs and parents obviously) I was so excited to try it out!
6 kids (ages 20 months to 4.5 years old)
5 adults (ages none of your business)
Monty’s Favourite Strawberry
Holly’s Favourite Mango
Eddy’s Favourite Chocolate
Note: If you are wondering who Monty, Holly and Eddy are, they are names of YellofruitTM’s founder’s kids. How is that for parents of the year!
The Testing Methodology:
We (and by we, I mean mostly the parents of course) critiqued based on taste and texture, and we gave each flavour a Yumminess Rating i.e. would we want to eat a whole tub, half a tub or a spoon in one sitting.
1. Monty’s Favourite Strawberry
Taste: Refreshing! That’s the word everyone used to describe strawberry. It was a light, refreshing and fruity flavour perfect for a hot summer day. It was sweet as expected for something strawberry flavoured but not too sweet. I personally have visions of enjoying it on a fresh waffle.
Texture: The texture was also light and reminded us all of sorbet. It’s not as creamy as ice cream so don’t expect that.
Yumminess Rating: Half a Tub
2. Holly’s Favourite Mango
Taste: The reviews of Holly’s Mango are very similar to Monty’s Strawberry. It was refreshing and ideal for a summer’s day! Mango wasn’t too sweet. Mango rose to the top as the favourite of most of the kids and adults.
Texture: Like strawberry, mango was light and a similar texture of sorbet.
Yumminess Rating: Half a Tub
3. Eddy’s Favourite Chocolate
Taste: The chocolate flavour was more of a dark chocolate flavour and not surprisingly it was a bit more popular with the adults versus the kids. We thought a future innovation of Salted Chocolate would be awesome to take this flavour to the next level.
Texture: Eddy’s Favourite Chocolate was the creamiest of the trio but still more reminiscent of a sorbet rather than an ice cream.
Yumminess Rating: A few spoons
So which flavour was the ultimate winner? Overall the strawberry and mango flavours were the top two amongst our backyard crew with mango having a slight edge over strawberry (to my disappointment as strawberry was my favourite!)
Our parent testers were also happy to see the cleaner ingredient deck (100% organic, plant based), however there is still sugar in YellofruitTM so you want to be mindful of how much you give your kids as with any other treat. FYI: YellofruitTM is organic and peanut free so you could easily serve this a birthday party or playdate.
Want to try YellofruitTM for yourself? Find it at FreshCo, Summerhill Markets, Nations Fresh Food, and many other independent grocery stores. Also as of July, you can pick it up in all Loblaws and Metro stores across the GTA.
